The battleground
The Darkspear Islands are a new battleground in a 15 versus 15 format, located off the coast of Kalimdor. The name points at the Darkspear troll tribe, whose history is bound up with the islands off Kalimdor.
The mechanics
Blizzard describes a mix of two familiar building blocks:
- Strategic control points that have to be held
- Arathi-Basin-style flag captures
That places the battleground between the two Classic staples: it takes Arathi Basin's resource tick and adds points whose control carries a different tactical weight.
Why 15 versus 15
Classic knows 10v10 (Warsong Gulch), 15v15 (Arathi Basin) and 40v40 (Alterac Valley). By going with 15 versus 15, Blizzard picks the size that proved the most playable in Classic — large enough for group tactics, small enough that individual players still matter.
Where it sits on the roadmap
PvP does not stop at this one battleground: the roadmap lists a PvP season refresh for both spring 2027 and summer 2027, plus general "PvP updates". What exactly those contain is open.
Still open
Blizzard has given no date for the Darkspear Islands — whether at launch on November 4 or later — and no details on honor, ranks, rewards or queues. There is no map of the battleground yet either.
