Podcast episode 6: layering, world moves, and factions on Roleplay-PvP

In the sixth episode of its podcast, Blizzard talks through the tech behind the seamless world: what gets better at zone borders for launch, why joining a group no longer just moves you, and that faction balance on Roleplay-PvP aims for 50/50 on its own.

The episode runs just over 68 minutes. At the table: Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield, Ana Resendez (Lead Software Engineer) and Frank Williams (Principal Software Engineer), hosted by Countdown to Classic with guest Shobek. The quotes below come from YouTube's automatic captions, with approximate timestamps so you can check them in the video. The captions don't name speakers, so this page says "Blizzard" rather than a name.

Zone borders and layering

Players popping in and out at zone borders, for example at the Orgrimmar exit, was largely fixed by the end of the beta: "you won't see that anymore when we go live" (around 22:20). Blizzard stops short of a promise: "it's not going to be a perfect contiguous world at all times" (around 23:18). Blizzard can set which zones share a partition and how many players fit in one. That setup will look different on day one than a month later (around 20:00 to 27:30).

World moves: a window instead of a jump

  • Joining a group no longer pulls you into another world on the spot: "it's not going to just move you" (around 41:16). You get a prompt and a time window to switch.
  • Guilds stay together: "once you join a guild, if you're not in a group, you should be in worlds with your guild's community" (around 42:10).
  • Early in the beta, "17 different systems" were moving players between worlds. The number of these moves went down over the beta.
  • Your client language plays a part in where you are placed.
  • The ignore list does not remove anyone from your world pool (around 49:17).

Rulesets and factions

Whether PvE and PvP players should be allowed to run instances together split the team. For launch the rulesets stay separate. Should Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP get too small, Blizzard says it has "levers": linking the auction houses or allowing shared instance groups (around 35:30).

On Roleplay-PvP (around 54:30): faction balance runs "in each individual rule set" and aims for 50/50. So you may not be able to create a Horde character there even if you play Horde on the regular PvP ruleset. Blizzard did not say whether Roleplay-PvP limits an account to one faction, the way PvP does.

Oceania

Blizzard has servers in Australia, but players there share North America's day/night cycle. Blizzard asks for feedback on whether day and night should flip abruptly when you join a group (around 50:40 to 53:30).

Discussed, not announced

  • Groups of 80 to 120 players ("army") and a "mega raid" on a whiteboard (around 13:48 and 15:45)
  • Servers that scale up automatically during large PvP battles. For launch, though: "the state at the end of the beta is what you can expect for launch" (around 16:11)
  • Proximity voice chat: "no solid plans"
  • World events: launch holidays differ little, some events were rebuilt. Blizzard is looking at large-scale PvP events and contests in the style of the fishing tournament.

What's next

There is no episode in launch week. The next one comes in two weeks and is about lore.

What this changes here

The rulesets page said nothing about Roleplay-PvP was known beyond its name. It now covers the separate faction balance; whether an account is limited to one faction there stays open on that page.
